Relationships

Father: Madog ab Einion ap Maredudd.

This relationship is given by Barrell and Davies (Table A) and by Lloyd (iii p. 63). Bartrum (Ednywain Bendew 5) shows a different Madog ab Einion, but he seems later to have revised his opinion.

(possible) Mother: a daughter of Richard [ap Cadwaladr ap Gruffudd]

Bartrum (Ednywain Bendew 5) shows a daughter of Richard as the wife of Madog ab Einion [ap Rhirid], but has scratched this out, presumably because he had realized that it was a different Madog ab Einion that the manuscript was referring to. The doubts that Barrell and Davies (p. 34) cast on the marriage-links attributed to the family of Llywelyn ap Madog presumably apply here.

(possible) Spouse: Gwenwhyfar Greg ferch Gruffudd ab Iorwerth.

Bartrum (Ednywain Bendew 5, Hwfa 5) shows this relationship, although he had at first mistakenly placed Llywelyn as a son of Madog ap Einion ap Rhirid. He lists the manuscripts giving the marriage of Llywelyn ap Madog ab Einion to Gwenhwyfar Greg ferch Gruffudd ap Iorwerth as: Peniarth 131 (p. 281), a manuscript written by Ieuan Brechfa c. 1500.; Peniarth 129 (p. 56), a copy of a 1497 manuscript by Gutun Owain, Peniarth 128 “Llyfr Edward ap Roger” (882b), written before 1582, and Peniarth 176 (p. 258), a manuscript by Gruffudd Hiraethog (died 1564). Barrell and Davies (p. 34), however, note, “It is is the marriage-links attributed to this family [that of Llywelyn ap Madog ab Einion ap Maredudd] which are suspect and in some cases patently mistaken.” Bartrum also notes that P226 gives Gwenwhyfar a different husband.

Evidence

Barell and Davies (p. 37) give evidence that Llywelyn had the support of the new English regime. He was well off by Welsh standards of the day. They note (p. 38) that the rental of Dyffryd Clwyd of 1324 "lists him as holding two carucates in Llanynys, Bodangharad, Maesmaencymro, and Yseifiog by military service (almost certainly comprising his share of the ancestral kinlands) and a further 144 1/2 acres in Corfedwen, Bryncaredig, Maesmaencymro, Ysgeifiog, and Derwenaniel" which Llywelyn had acquired himself.
