Ind’re of the one part & Ralph Ward of Guisbrough in Cleveland in the s.d County of York Gentleman of the other part of & Concerning all that Close or parcell of Ground of him the s.d Thomas Adamson party to the s.d Ind’re now or late Commonly Called or known by the Name of the Bankside Containing by Estimation Three Rood (more or less) lying & being within the Township parish precincts of Territories of Northlofthouse af.d now in the occupation of William Brown as Tenant thereof to the s.d Thomas Adamson party to the s.d Ind’re at the yearly rent of Eight Shillings or there abouts w’ch s.d Close of parcel of Ground is Bounded with the Lands of Zachary Harnage More Esq.r towards the East part thereof with the Lands of George Middleton towards the West part thereof with the Lands of the said Ralph Ward towards the North part thereof and with the High road from North Lofthouse af.d to Easington in Cleveland in the s.d County of York towards the South part thereof Together with the appurt’s the Execution of w’ch s.d Ind’re is witnessed by Thomas Preswick of Guisbrough af.d Yeom’ George Havelock of Guisbrough af.d Clock:maker and John Preston of Stokesley in the s.d County of York Gentleman.

Thomas's will:


This is the Last Will and Testament of me Thomas Adamson of Lofthouse in the County of York Weaver which I (being of sound mind memory and Understanding and considering the Uncertainty of this life) do make in manner following, that is to say, I give and devise unto my son Thomas Adamson a Freehold Estate consisting of a Dwelling wherein I now live with a Shop and all other appurtenances and the Garth adjoining Also two Closes or Parcels of Ground all situated in the Township of Lofthouse aforesaid He paying thereout Yearly one third part thereof unto my Wife Elizabeth Adamson during her natural life and also the three following Legacies, to wit, Ten Pounds unto my Daughter Mary Wife of Robert Sanderson, Ten Pounds unto my Daughter Elizabeth Wife of Thomas Atkinson, and Ten Pounds unto Jane Wife of William Watson all which sum is to be paid at the end of twelve Months next after my decease. I also give and devise unto my son Robert Adamson the Sum of Twenty Pounds and my Clock, I give and devise unto my Son Joseph Adamson the Sum of Twenty Pounds, I give and devise unto my son William Adamson the Sum of Twenty Pounds, And my will is that the Interest arising from the three last Legacys shall be paid Yearly unto my Wife Elizabeth aforesaid during her natural life or so long as she shall remain my Widow And also to have the Clock during her life or so long as she shall remain my Widow, I also give and devise unto my two Sons Luke and George Adamson to share and share alike one half of a Messuage or Tenement will a Garth adjoining now belonging and in the possession of Hannah Grimstone which comes to me at her decease and situated in the Township of Lofthouse aforesaid And my will is that if my Wife Elizabeth Adamson aforesaid should survive the said Hannah Grimstone that she is to enjoy it as long as she shall live or remain my Widow and then to go to my two son Luke & George Adamson as aforesaid And last of all I give and devise unto my Wife Elizabeth Adamson all the rest residue and remainder of my Personal Estate and Effects whatsoever she paying thereout my just Debts and Funeral Expences And I do constitute and appoint my Wife Elizabeth Adamson and my two sons Thomas and Robert Adamson’s my sole Executors and Executrix of this my last Will and Testament revoaking all former Wills by me made and declare this only to be my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this Twentieth Sixth day of April one thousand seven hundred and Eighty Eight -- Thomas Adamson [seal] Signed Sealed Published and declared by the said Thomas Adamson the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us whose names are hereunto written who all of us in his presence and in the presence of each other have Subscribed our names as Witnesses hereunto -- Witnesses -- John Rowland -- Richard Midelton -- Christ.r Foster.-- Past June 95.

A Memorial of an Indenture of three parts bearing even date here with and made or Mentioned to be made Between Thomas Adamson of North Lofthouse in the County of York Weaver Robert Adamson of the same place Weaver and Elizabeth Adamson of the same place Widow (which said Thomas Adamson Robert Adamson and Elizabeth Adamson are Executors and Executrix of Thomas Adamson late of North Loftus aforesaid Yeoman deceased) and William Ward of Moorsom in the said County Yeoman of the first part Richard Middleton of North Lofthouse aforesaid Yeoman (Eldest Son and Heir of George Middleton late of North Lofthouse aforesaid Yeoman deceased) and of Jane his Wife heretofore called Jane Ralph Spinster also deceased who was one of the two Daughters and Coheiresses of Richard Ralph heretofore of North Lofthouse aforesaid Yeoman deceased) of the second part and William Dobson of North Lofthouse Cartwright of the third part purporting to be an absolute assignment and Conveyance from the said Thomas Adamson Robert Adamson Elizabeth Adamson and Richard Middleton to the said William Dobson of all that Cottage house or Tenement and all that piece or parcel of Waste Ground thereunto adjoining which together with the said Cottage house or Tenement included contains in length from East to West twenty Feet or thereabouts little more or less and in Breadth from North to South twenty one Feet little more or less which said Cottage house Waste Ground and premises is situate standing and being at North Lofthouse aforesaid on the North side of the Street there and in front of the Dwellinghouse and premises now occupied by the said Richard Middleton abutting and adjoining on the East on a Messuage on Premises belonging to the said Thomas Adamson and on the West and North on the Messuage and other Ground and Premises of the said Richard Middleton and on the South on the Town Street of North Lofthouse aforesaid together with all Houses Outhouses Buildings Yards Garths Gardens Walls Ways Waters Easements Commons Liberties privileges Heredts and appurs whatseover to the same belonging To hold the same unto the said William Dobson his Heirs and Assigns forever which said Indenture is attested by Thomas Watson of Easington in the County of York Farmer and John Wardell of Guisborough in the said County of York Gentleman and is required to be Registered by the said Richard Middleton as Witness his hand and Seal this Third day of November one thousand seven hundred and Ninety six,

A Memorial of an Indenture of four parts bearing even date herewith and made or mentioned to be made between Richard Middleton of North Lofthouse in the County of York Yeoman (which said Richard Middleton is the Eldest Son and Heir at Law of George Middleton late of North Lofthouse aforesaid Yeoman dec’ed and of Jane his Wife heretofore called Jane Ralph also dec’ed who was one of the two Daughters and Coheiresses of Richard Ralph heretofore of North Lofthouse aforesaid Yeoman dec’ed) of the first part Thomas Adamson of North Lofthouse aforesaid Weaver Robert Adamson of the same place Weaver and Elizabeth Adamson of the same place Widow (which said Thomas Adamson Robert Adamson and Elizabeth Adamson are the Executors named in the last Will and Testament of Thomas Adamson late of North Lofthouse aforesaid Yeoman dec’ed) and William Ward of Morsholm in the said County Yeoman of the second part William Dobson of the same place Cartwright of the third part and John Smith of the same place Merchant of the fourth part Purporting to be an Assignment of a Mortgage term from the _ Thomas Adamson Robert Adamson Elizabeth Adamson and William Ward to the said William Dobson and Richard Middleton and a Release from them of all Monies due therein from the said Richard Middleton and an absolute Conveyance from the said Richard Middleton to the said William Dobson of all that Close or parcel of Ground adjoining to the Lane leading from Easington to Lofthouse towards the West and also one other Close or parcel of Ground adjoining upon the Lands formerly of William Pinder and the Lands belonging to part of South Lofthouse towards the South and also one Bank or parcel of Ground thereunto belonging and therewith used held or enjoyed which said Closes pieces or parcels of Ground are known by the Name of Whimey Bush and contain together by estimation four acres or thereabouts little more or less and are now in the Tenure or Occupation of the said William Dobson his undertenants or assigns together with all Houses Outhouses Edifices Barns Stables Buildings Walls Fences Ways Paths Passages Waters Watercourses and Appurt’s whatsoever to the said Premises belonging or in anywise appertaining to hold the same to the said William Dobson and John Smith their Heirs and assigns for Ever nevertheless as to the Estate of the said John Smith in the said premises in trust only for the said William Dobson his Heirs and assigns for ever which said Indenture is attested by George Moon of Hinderwell in the County of York Miller and John Wardell of Guisbrough in the said County of York Gentleman and is required to be Registered by the said Richard Middleton Thomas Adamson Robert Adamson Elizabeth Adamson and William Ward as witness their Hands and Seals the twelfth day of May one thousand seven hundred and Ninety Eight
