Commentary
Mary’s parentage
The burial entry for Mary’s 17 March 1829 burial at Thornton Dale gives her age at death as 55. This exactly fits a baptism 30 April 1773 at Thornton Dale. The baptism entry records Mary’s father’s name as William Maw.
William Maw had eleven children baptized in Thornton Dale between 1766 and 1791. The Thornton Dale register records the marriage in 1765 of William Maw and Ann Maw. (William and Ann were not closely related, although they were probably distant cousins. Maw was a locally common name.)
Ann Maw’s brother William left a 1793 will in which he named his sister Ann Maw and Ann’s children, including Mary.
