Roger Almond (died 1729)
Roger is presumably the spurrier in a 1685 petition cited by Sinclair (2:152). In his children’s baptism records and his burial record, his residence is generally given as Hallgate, in Wigan. In 1720, his house in Hallgate was assessed at four and a half shillings for the relief of the poor. (Sinclair 2:207).

Commentary
Roger’s parentage:
Roger’s eldest child, James, was baptized 10 April 1688 in Wigan. Roger was living in Hallgate at the time.
The only baptism of a Roger Almond in Wigan in the period is 11 September 1660 (the date was possibly of the birth, not baptism). The father was named James and the residence Hallgate. The residence and the match in names between Roger’s father in this baptism and the name he gave his eldest son give confidence that this is the correct baptism.
James Almond of Wigan, labourer, left half a messuage in Hallgate to his son Roger in his 1682 will. James named his wife Grace in his will. James and Grace also appear in Wigan Court Leet Rolls from the period. Grace is described as “Grace Almond widdow” in her burial record.
