Commentary
John’s parentage:
John’s 1712 burial record states that he was “Aged About 81 years” at his death. The only baptism in Gloucestershire in the indexes that is within several years of the implied birth date is that in Minchinhampton 20 February 1630/1, which fits exactly. The names of the father, Robert, supports the identification of this baptism. Also, Robert’s eldest son was named Nathaniel, which was the name of John’s second son.
In his 1634 will, Robert Ridler of “Upper Lippiatt in the limitacon of Strowd in the p[ar]rish of Bilsey mentions, among others, his sons Nathniel and Robert and land in Minchinhampton. He also names his wife Joan. Robert Ridler married Joan Bayley (or Fisher) in 1610 in Bisley.
