Commentary
John’s parentage
Baptism and burial entries in the Nettleham register show that John was a husbandman living in Nettleham. He had several children baptized at Nettleham between 1710 and 1726.
The 1716 will of William Moss, husbandman of Nettleham, names his son John Moss and John’s children Robert, Elizabeth, and Ann. Elizabeth was baptized in 1714/5. Robert and Ann’s baptisms do not appear in the Nettleham register. John’s daughter Mary, not mentioned in William’s will, was baptized in 1710. Thus there are some discrepancies. I don’t think these pose any serious difficulties. John and Ann’s marriage record has not been located, so it seems plausible that Robert and Ann were baptized wherever John and Ann were married (probably Ann’s home parish). John’s daughter Mary must have died young. A burial record for her has not been located, but John and Ann had another daughter named Mary baptized in 1726.
The baptism of “John the son of William Mosse” was recorded in the Nettleham register in 1682. William had other children baptized in 1683/4, 1685, and 1688. In 1683/4, his wife’s name was recorded as Mary. The Nettleham register records the marriage in 1681 of William Mosse and Elizabeth Blansher.
