John’s age is given variously as 22, 24, and 25 in his father’s inquisitions post mortem taken 27 Edward I (CIPM 3 no. 534) .


Date of Death: 1317.

Place of Death: unknown.

The date is given by the VCH of Oxford (6:sub Hampton Poyle). The writ for John’s Middlesex inquisition post mortem is dated 18 October, 11 Edward II (CIPM 6 no. 93).


Relationships


Father: Walter de la Poyle.

This relationship is given by the VCH of Oxford (6:sub Hampton Poyle).

Mother: Alice de Hampton.

This relationship is given by the VCH of Oxford (6:sub Hampton Poyle).


Spouse: Isabel.

This relationship is given in the inquisition post mortem of John’s father Walter (CIPM 3 no. 534) and in his own inquisition post mortem (CIPM 6 no. 93). Isabel died before John.


Spouse: Mabel.

The VCH of Berkshire (sub Chilton) states that Margery was the daughter of Mabel. Greenfield (p. 211) cites a deed in the Gaynesford Cartulary “dated at Crowhurst in Surrey, on Sunday next before Michaelmas Day, 5 Edward III. 1331, whereby Mabill, the widow of Sir John de la Poyle, grants to John de Gaynesford and Margaret his wife, their heirs and assigns, all her lands and tenements in Crowhurst.”
