Relationships

Father: Osbern fitz Richard.

This relationship is given by Maund (ODNB), by Keats-Rohan (p. 616), and by Roderick (p. 5). Cawley notes that Orderic Vitalis (3:270-271) describes Bernard de Neufmarché as the “gener” (son-in-law) of Osbern fitz Richard.

Mother: Nest ferch Gruffudd ap Llywelyn.

This relationship is given by Maund (ODNB), by Lloyd (2:397 n), by Keats-Rohan (p. 616), and by Roderick (p. 5). It is recorded by Giraldus Cambrensis (6:28-29): ”Primus Normannorum hanc provinciam, quæ tribus cantaredis distincta conseritur, Bernardus de Novo Mercatu nova contra Kambriæ fines conquisitione possedit. Hic filiam Nestæ, filiæ Griffin filii Lewelini, cujus tyrannis totam aliquamdiu Gualliam oppresserat, materno Nestam nomine, quam et Angli vertendo Anneis vocavere, sibi matrimonio cupulavit;...” Lipscomb (1:202) gives her father as Traharne Cradoc, King of North Wales, noting that other sources give her father as Gruffudd ap Llywelyn. Lipscombe doesn’t give a source for the connection to Trahaearn, but perhaps this is based on some late and not very credible genealogies which give Trahaearn as Nest’s 2nd husband. Other late sources, used by Bartrum in EVWG (“Early Series [41]”), give Gruffudd two daughters named Nest, one of whom married Richard, and the other of whom married Trahaearn. Baldwin (LaI) argues that in both cases the connection with Trahaearn is probably fictitious.

Spouse: Bernard de Neufmarché.

This relationship is given by Maund (ODNB), by Keats-Rohan (p. 616), and by Roderick (p. 5).
