Beumann and Baldwin both note that Dietrich was a descendant of Widukind, an 8th century Saxon leader.

Mother: Mathilde, abbess of Herford.

Baldwin discusses parents falsely attributed to her.


Spouse: Reinhild.

Although Reinhild was stated to be of Danish-Frisian descent, Baldwin notes that there is no good evidence that her father was the Danish king Godefrid (died 885), as is often stated.
