Being an active and effective reader is vital to the success of high school. Literature 9 focuses on reading strategies and then applies them to nonfiction, drama, short stories, and the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Various reading skills will be the focus as the year progresses. Reading skills will developed and mastered. Vocabulary will also be emphasized.
This required course for all second-year students covers four major units of study. It covers an introduction of basic speech technique, literature, composition, and an introduction to Shakespeare and the Shakespearean play. The course is required for two semesters of study. Class analysis will emphasize oral presentation, listening skills, writing ability, and an understanding of the fundamentals of the language through reading and comprehension.
This class emphasizes the great works of American authors. Major units of study include Native American writings, revolutionary war literature, the Romantic era, poetry, and 20th century authors. Class analysis will emphasize writing, reading checks, participation, listening and reading skills, and exams. Students will also be required to read novels and reflect on their style.
This is a basic government course. The course will include historical background, citizenship responsibilities, politics, and the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government. Current events will be analyzed in conjunction to government.
This is a one semester program designed to help the student understand everyday law. The class will include understanding the law, the difference between juvenile and adult courts and laws, nature and kinds of law, law enforcement and the courts, crimes, torts and other law-related areas. This is an area which should be of high interest to the student.
