Life has a way of handing us curve balls. Today could have been one doozey of a curve ball.
In Literature 9 we began our study of persuasion. We discussed the idea that persuasion is reason and logic combined with an emotional connection. We then introduced the concept of an argument. An argument lacks the emotional component. It contains assertions (an opinion), support, mention the opposing side, and offer a recommendation. We then defined the term assertion - a one-sided statement.
In English 10 we're still finishing our short reading assignments with our eyes looking towards working on a longer program (five minutes). I distributed the next set of vocabulary words and we will assign them tomorrow. Finally, I handed out the requirements for the literary program. This will be a major assignment before the end of the quarter.
In American Government we started the class period with a discussion about the government shut down. There are strong opinions all around. We then discussed the English legacies - a limited government and a representative government. We reviewed rule of law as seen in the Magna Carta. We then (in 3rd hour) discussed the English Bill of Rights and the Petition of Rights. We will finish this discussion on Friday.
Happy Wednesday everyone! Hug someone today, and tell them they're important to you.
