Well, I hope everyone had a great weekend. It was so hard to come to school today, and from what I understand it was a case of the "blah's" for all of us. Hopefully I shook it off and we got some things accomplished.
In Literature 9 we started out watching a video of the magic of David Blaine. I watched his card tricks over and over, and I can't figure them out. We then discussed the negative effects of daydreaming (we discussed the positive outcomes on Friday). We reviewed four of the vocabulary words, and then read the biography of James Thurber. On the bottom of the worksheet I handed out, we wrote the definition of satire. Then we filled out together the information in the chart about this story. The story is divided into fantasy (daydreams) and reality. We read the first daydream and wrote down three details that related to sight, three to sound, and then discussed feelings. What was the commander feeling? What were the others feeling? Then we read the reality. We decided that Mrs. Mitty is something of a shrew. We again wrote down three details for each and then how we imagined Mitty feeling and how she felt. The assignment is to finish the chart for tomorrow, writing down the "occupation" Mitty imagines himself to be in.
In English 10 we discussed the difference between formal and informal speeches. I also pointed out that this is a formal speech, and it should reflect rehearsal, planning, and organization. We managed to get through five speakers in each class. With 41 individuals in English 10, it will take us six to seven days to get through our speeches. While we're waiting for that, we should be working on our museum box. The costumes are available in the speech room. That would make sense as then the trading cards and videos would match.
In American Government we basically got both classes on the same page. Third hour needed the final information on Mixed Market, and fourth hour we expanded a bit on our discussion from Friday. It was interesting as I just picked out randomly products or companies to discuss, and then we discovered short CNN videos that coincided with our discussion. It was really "freaky" - if I believed in that. So thank you Lord for caring about what goes on in my classroom.
All in all, I'm glad I came to school today. I know that I really pondered staying home, but it was well worth seeing my students and working with them today. Not bad for a Monday.
