Another day, another ... My mother always used to say another "dollar," but I'm not sure it applies here. Another day, another lesson? That fits more.
In Literature 9 we started with a reading check over "The Scarlet Ibis". We then introduced the story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." I love this story because I love the message behind it - don't waste your life swimming in daydreams and "coulda, woulda, shoulda". I equate it with the beginning of the year with Lucinda Matlock, Fiddler Jones, and George Gray. We reviewed two of the vocabulary words - distraught, and haggard. We'll finish the rest of them tomorrow. I read the first "daydream/reality" combination, and we completed the graphic organizer. Finish reading the story tomorrow and complete the graphic.
In English 10 it was a little chaotic because the two sections are at different places. We continued with our vocabulary presentations (we've finished eight in sixth hour and four in the seventh hour). We also worked on reviewing the comma rules. Seventh hour should finish the comma worksheet. Our test will be on Thursday. In the sixth hour, we worked on converting our URL's into a workable bibliography. We will rehearse tomorrow and begin speeches on Friday. In seventh hour we worked on our introductions and conclusions, and tomorrow we will work on the bibliography.
In American Literature we finished up our Patrick Henry. We unanimously decided that this speech was full of pathos. He provided the perfect structure for an argument - ethos, followed by logos, and end with firey pathos. I introduced the concept of blackout poetry. Following the directions outlined in a worksheet, everyone is to write a poem using the words (in order) of Patrick Henry. An illustration is expected as well. This poem will be due next Tuesday. That allows for a little creativity. For Thursday, you will have a quiz over rhetorical devices.
Good luck to all the athletes today. I know that this is a big game, so I hope you play well.
