I graduated from Webster High School (go Bearcats!) and South Dakota State University (go Jackrabbits!) too many years ago to count. I majored in Political Science with a minor in Speech. I married Craig Sandbulte in 1985 and have three beautiful daughters. We moved to El Paso, Texas in 1988 and lived there for almost five years. We returned to the Midwest primarily for their daughters' education and safety. I was hired by the George Community School District in June of 1992 and have been here ever since. My girls are all G-LR graduates, and they have gone on to have wonderful lives. Rebecca is a stay-at-home mom, she is married to Jon Knacke and four children: Gabriella (8), Addisyn (7), a son Colton (4) and their family was rounded out with Elliana (1). Kendra is lives in Bloomfield, IA, and is married to Jamie Taylor. She works as the clerk at her county seat. They have a mini-heifer farm, and the spend a great deal of time outside. She is the proud mother of Tate, affectionately known as "Tater-tot". I'm not sure he's going to want that to stick. Tessa was born in April of 2018, and I affectionately call her "Sweet T. Ashley is the new math teacher at West Lyon. She is a disciple of Mrs. Johnson and loves working with kids. I love being a teacher, but I love being a wife and mom (and grandmother) more! You will no doubt get tired of hearing about my family, especially the grandchildren. Please just tell me to stop!
I have taught a variety of subjects during my teaching careers, including Literature 9, English 10, American Government, American Literature, law, creative writing, speech, and theater. Currently, I teach all levels in the high school. At some point in the day, I see all the freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. It's a full load, but one that I love.
I serve on several committees at G-LR. I've been a mentor teacher, and I'm helping to bring Iowa Core to GLR. This year I'm also serving as an Instructional Leader. I help with curriculum, professional development, and technology. One-to-one computers have radically changed education and my classroom. I hope to learn how to infuse technology into my classroom. I enjoy using a variety of resources to made the classroom more engaging and exciting.
I will be coaching both large group and individual events this year. This was a change in plans, but I love working with speech kids, so as long as the school wants me, I'll be glad to continue as GLR's coach. I've recently returned to the Drama Director. I'm excited to pick up this role again. I have to say that I kind of missed it.
I have served as an officer for the Iowa High School Speech Association. My teams have been awarded several state-wide honors, including Sweepstakes Winner for Individual Events in 2002 and a banner winner in 2006 for Radio Broadcasting and in 2016 we won the Television News banner. George-Little Rock High School has attended Individual Events All-State every year since 1992 and all but four years in Large Group categories. I've also had the honor of speaking at the Iowa High School Speech Association Convention several times on a variety of topics.
In my spare time (ha, like I have any!), I love photography. With that, I also really enjoy scrapbooking. I've discovered digital scrapbooking, so I enjoy making digital books. I also love Pinterest and Facebook. This summer I picked up the hobby of quilting (boy I'm really embracing this grandma thing), and I discovered it's very therapeutic! I love to read, but during the school year, I don't get to read as often as I would like. I have to admit I'm a television-aholic. I feel that I watch too much television, especially crime dramas.
I am very active in my church. I've taught Sunday School and RCYF (youth) sponsors. I feel that my faith is what grounds me. I judge all successes by how it best serves the kingdom of God. I'm currently a catechism teacher and try to bring drama into the church.
My goal as a teacher is to prepare my students to be active, contributing members of society with strong communication skills. I hope that goal is reflected in all the units of study we journey together. I hope when they graduate my students find themselves prepared to be the best spouses, parents, and citizens.
