Friday! This has been a long week - or at least it feels like a long week. Next week will be even longer - it's the first full week (five days) that we will have since Christmas. We haven't had a full week of school yet. That's crazy!
In Literature 9 we started class with a funny Minion movie. Then we moved onto our persuasion notes. This took most of the class period. I then told the classes a little about Anne Murrow Lindberg. We started to read the essay "Sayonara," but unfortunately ran out of time. We will have to pick it up on Monday. Remember you will need to have a new reading book for the start of fourth quarter. (You can continue to read the one you're in the middle of as well. Just if you are in the process of starting a new one, have it for Monday.)
In English 10 we started out talking about "what bugs you". This is to help us determine our topic area for our Pet Peeve or Rant speech on Monday. We then read over the perimeters of the speech (1-3 minutes, introduction, body [two main points], and conclusion and delivery). We then chose our vocabulary words for Social Sciences. Finally, we started to discuss persuasive topics for our panel discussion project. For Monday, have the No Red Ink diagnostic on verb tenses completed.
American Government simply blew me away. Everyone turned in their one-pagers on a Constitutional amendment. They looked amazing!! I was so impressed. We had some great conversations about the controversies that arose from the various amendments. I was particularly astonished that they were modern cases revolving around the third amendment. We then started to discuss the Bill of Rights, but we only got to Amendment 1 (libel, slander, and prior restraint). For Monday, there is a worksheet on the case studies revolving around the Bill of Rights.
In Law, we watched a short video (7 minutes) - Crash Course on search and seizure. It did a good job explaining probable cause and reasonable suspicion. We then continued with our criminal procedure notes. We discussed Gideon vs. Wainright and Miranda vs. Arizona - two pivotal cases involving the right to an attorney, regardless of whether you can afford it or not and the requirement that all individuals be told their basic legal rights - the right to an attorney and freedom from self-incrimination. For Monday, please read the next installment of our Mystery Box.
This weekend is a big one! Good Luck to the Speech Team and their journey to Carroll IA.
