I'm trying to catch up from blizzard, babies, and ...I'm so trying to think of a "b" word, but nothing is coming to me.
In Literature 9 both days were a mixture of finishing "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "The Necklace". We discussed Thurber's use of "diction". Why did he make up words, use words incorrectly (malapropisms), and remain ambiguous (what's-it's-name). It was done, of course, for humor. It also showed us that we can't always rely on our narrator to give us a complete picture. We also reviewed the Expand Our Vocabulary Words. Then yesterday (while I was welcoming a new grandbaby into the world), everyone worked on a vocabulary lesson for these two stories, Then they were to read the story "The Necklace" for today.
In English 10 we worked on notes related to Informational speaking - specifically for our demonstration speech. Everyone also completed a complements worksheet. With the substitute yesterday, it was generally a work day. They were supposed to research and work on their outlines related to their demonstration speech.
In American Government we had pretty much chaos. On Friday I only saw third hour. We discussed the symbols, mottoes, and vision seen in our Great Seal. We discussed the eagle, the crest of the golden glory, the unsupported shied, the arrows and the olive branch. On the flip side we also discussed the unfinished pyramid, the all-seeing eye, the Latin phrases, and the Roman numerals at the base of the pyramid. Unfortunately fourth hour never heard any of this. The blizzard trumped all attempts to get things done. We will have to finish on Wednesday with the test the following Monday. I hate having a test over Thanksgiving break, but we can blame Old Man Winter.
All in all, just chaos. But what else should we expect from winter in northwest Iowa.
