Another day is nearly complete! Tonight is play auditions and that means "Busy" hit an all-time high!
In Literature 9 we updated our Table of Contents and Grade Sheet. Our notebooks are so key to the success of the classroom. As a teacher I know that organizational skills need to be developed, and once they are, things go so much better. We then discussed what a unit plan was. We reviewed the Pre-Reading Activity Worksheet. I shared with the students that that assignment was my first impression of them as students, writers, and thinkers. Most wrote in complete sentences, but a few were just bulleted. Also I reminded them that "texting" is not appropriate language to use in a paper turned into a teacher, especially an English teacher! We then pair read the Lincoln's Second Inauguration Address. We discovered that the Graphic Novel format made this difficult essay easier to understand. Eighth hour class, since we will not be meeting tomorrow, will need to read "A Brother's Crime" for Monday.
In English 10 we took our first Drill the Skill Assessment. I'm confidant that everyone did just fine! We then went on to review the five communication arenas: intrapersonal, interpersonal (one-to-one), group (small or large), public speaking, and mass media. We gave examples to firmly imbed that concept in our minds. We then discussed why people speak in the first place.
American Literature started out with a conversation about Chief Seattle. We learned how to use padlet to put our thoughts down about the speech he made about the environment. Chief Seattle might be considered the first environmentalist. He confirmed the essential question - is anything really new? In this case no. The preservation of the environment is key to human survival. We then completed on Moodle our Novel Choice questions. Here was where everyone mapped out their goals for this upcoming quarter. The first posting is due next Friday, August 30th. Hopefully everyone will create a habit of reading.
