American Literature studies the power of words. American culture was reflected in the literature of the time. We will study the various movements, but not necessarily in chronological order. This year American Literature is every other day. You will have to work on time management and making sure that you don't forget to get the reading or assignments completed. This is the last required English course, and its primary focus is to help you become better readers.
NOTE: Remember I will now be posting the agenda to the Google Classroom stream.
177. Thursday, May 19, 2022: We discussed whether the American dream was dead. It scared me how many of you thought it was. If it is, what's the point? We shared a few things we put on our "bucket lists." Then we took the Our Town quiz. Anyone who did not use their I-Pass on the one-pager needed to turn that in either on-line or in person. Have a great summer. When you sit in here again, it will be as seniors. CODE: umbrellas
176. Wednesday, May 18, 2022: We finished watching Act II and then looked over the questions. Then we started Act III and managed to finish the play with a few (not many) minutes to spare. I pointed out an assignment posted to Google Classroom - 25 Things to Do Before You Sleep. Read the instructions carefully. Everyone also turned in their notebook - keeping their one-pager instructions as well as the Our Town questions. The answers to the movie's study guide was posted to Google Classroom. Our quiz will be on Friday. CODE: "It all goes so fast."

If you want to use your I-Pass in American Literature, you can use it on your one-pager. You may NOT use them on your notebooks. You could also use them on the Our Town quiz. I also explained an assignment I've given for years. Think of 25 things you'd like to do during your lifetime. Read the instructions - it's pretty self-explanatory. CODE: chickens
173. Friday, May 13, 2022: The Tuesday/Thursday class watched most of (except for 3 minutes) of Act II - Love and Marriage. We will discuss this on Tuesday, along with collecting your notebooks. 162. Thursday, April 28, 2022: We looked at our quotes on the Padlet. If you didn't have one that was humorous, you were "encouraged" to return to the Padlet with a humorous Mark Twain quote. Then we were going to take a reading check over Chapter 2 of Huckleberry Finn, but it seems no one bothered to look at the packet. It was hard not to get angry, so I did. It just goes to show that you don't look at what I hand out. I deleted the check and we'll do it tomorrow after you actually read the story. Tomorrow we're going to go to the auditorium and experience the story "The War Prayer". CODE: Idiots and School Board

CODE: 759 editions
160. Tuesday, April 26, 2022: We started with reading for ten minutes. We won't be doing that with any regularity, but when I can squeeze some minutes in, I will. Then I created a Padlet where you were to find a quote by Mark Twain, post it to the Padlet link I had on Google Classroom. Then identify what type of humor (irony, understatement, exaggeration or incongruity) and then the style (Horatian or Juvenilian). It's my understanding that you had trouble posting. I'll see what may be the issue. Then you were to have watched the rest of the Huckleberry Finn movie and fill out the worksheet. Finally, class ended with a story map for Chapter 2 of Huckleberry Finn. Have that filled out when you return to class on Thursday. I also reminded people that they had several missing assignments and it affected their midterms. Please follow the directions posted to the email. Let's get that made up. CODE: Tom Sawyer

91. Wednesday, January 12, 2022 (Mon/Wed): We did not read today because I wanted to be sure that we got through the end of the movie. We discussed the importance of a person's "name" - "reputation". This entire revolved around the concept of a person's reputation. Notice that Abigail acted the way she did because her reputation actually improved throughout the trials, John's reputation prevented him from coming forward with admission of adultery, Reverend Parris, Lt. Governor Danforth, and the names continue. We reviewed the rest of the vocabulary lesson #5 words. We did finish the movie and we worked on the viewing questions. Remember that if you're absent, you'll want to read this blog, record the code words, and then go to Google Classroom and look at the agenda posted there. I discussed how reading journals are now going to have a question that asks you to reread your journals for grammar and punctuation. No longer will I accept lower case "i's" or no periods at the end of a sentence. We went through Quizizz again to refresh our minds about the rules and expectations in class. 26. Tuesday, September 28, 2021 (Tues/Thurs): I did "lecture" a bit about commitment and getting things read and completed. I'm getting tired as I feel I say the same thing every day (just a different class). We read for ten minutes, then I handed out the vocabulary on probability. We will be reviewing those words during our next class. Then we returned to Quizizz and tried to get as far as we could reviewing the information found in William Bradford's diary. For Thursday, read the article called "Women and Children First." CODE: Samoset
25. Monday, September 27, 2021 (Mon/Wed): We did discuss the fact that we haven't had an assessment yet, and that kind of skews the midterm grades. It also puts more of an emphasis on your independent reading book. We read for ten minutes, and then we started the Quizizz on William Bradford. We didn't get quite to where I was hoping, but it will just have to wait until Wednesday. CODE: Squanto
24. Friday, September 24, 2021 (Mon/Wed): After reading for ten minutes, we discussed primary vs. secondary sources. then everyone completed vocabulary #3 (you will need the reading comprehension to complete). There was a short video on the Mayflower. I always find it interesting that the hold where everyone stayed was only 5'5". So many of us would not have traveled comfortably. Then, because I was gone, there was an audio clip that allowed me to read and discuss Bradford's diary. For Monday, please read the rest of Bradford's diary. Also, don't forget to complete Reading Journal #5. CODE: John Howland
23. Thursday, September 23, 2021 (Tues/Thurs): After reading for ten minutes, we completed the vocabulary day #3. You will need the reading comprehension paper in order to complete. We then watched this short video from the History Channel on the expedition to America. Taking out our William Bradford resume and packet, we highlighted some key pieces of information. I then read the Book 1, Chapter 9. Notice the unusual spelling. It's because there were no rules established at that point. Reading it aloud makes it a little easier. For Tuesday, read the rest of his journal (it might be easier to read it aloud rather than silently.), complete reading journal #5, and turn in page numbers on Friday. CODE: John Howland
22. Wednesday, September 22, 2021 (Mon/Wed): After reading for ten minutes, we then completed vocabulary day #2. We discussed what the Mayflower colonists might have learned from the Jamestown colony - the importance of leadership, the "hit or miss" (Jude's words) relationship with the Native Americans, life is hard, and you're probably going to die. We then took a reading check over John Smith. Finally, I introduced an immigration assignment. Find a modern immigrant and fill in the form posted to Google Classroom. I hope you can make the connection between immigrating here in 1607, 1900, and today - the feelings are probably pretty similar. CODE: Annotations
21. Tuesday, September 21, 2021 (Tues/Thurs): After reading for ten minutes, we then completed vocabulary day #2. 20. Monday, September 20, 2021 (Mon/Wed): After reading for ten minutes, we went to Google Classroom and completed Day #1 of Vocabulary. We'll complete one each day of class this week. Then we reviewed the questions related to "the Starving Times". On the back of the handout, we put down What disadvantages and challenges did the colonists face in Jamestown? We discussed the leadership, the death rate, and the resources that were difficult to extract. Finish the chart, and also read the biography of William Bradford. CODE: archeological dig
19. Friday, September 17, 2021 (Tues/Thurs): We completed our first (Day #1) of our vocabulary. We will continue with the vocabulary lessons as the days progress. Then we had to review the resume along with John Smith's diary. The discussion and interest in this diary was a little tough to get out of you, so we will be having a reading check over John Smith's journal. Please read the resume of William Bradford for Tuesday. (CODE: The Starving Time)
18. Thursday, September 16, 2021 (Tues/Thurs): Today I reviewed the vocabulary via a video link. Then using the presentations that I posted to Google Classroom, you were to highlight or answer the questions related to John Smith. Please read "The Starving Time" and answer the questions. CODE: annotations
17. Wednesday, September 15, 2021 (Mon/Wed): Today we read for ten minutes and then we reviewed the vocabulary. We will be doing a lesson over these words soon. Then we started talking about John Smith and the starving time at Jamestown. For Monday, read "The Starving Time" and answer the questions. Also, remember to document your page number on Friday. CODE: Don't work, don't eat.
16. Tuesday, September 14, 2021 (Tues/Thurs and Mon/Wed): Today was our Ellis Island Immigration Simulation. I hope you not only had fun but learned a bit as well. I love speaking in my Jewish/German accent and harassing you. My ancestors probably came through Ellis Island, and I would hazard a guess that many of your ancestors did as well. For tomorrow, please write a letter home to someone you left behind. Tell them about the experience as well as how you felt. Did you make it to America? Where were you headed (Iowa, New York, California)? If you were being sent home, how'd that make you feel? Think about the information that you would share with those in the "Old Country". Would it be an encouragement for them to make the trip? CODE: Hans
15. Monday, September 13, 2021 (Mon/Wed): We read for ten minutes, and then I gave the lowdown for tomorrow's simulation. We will meet in the auditorium at the beginning of fourth hour to change and begin the simulation. Then we reviewed our vocabulary words. I introduced John Smith and his resume. We were highlighting important information. For Wednesday, you need to have the journal read and annotated. There will be a reading check. CODE: mercenary.
14. Friday, September 10, 2021 (Mon/Wed): We read for ten minutes, and then we basically went to the costume room and picked out our costumes. Please read your John Smith journal and annotate it. CODE: Playing dressup
13. Thursday, September 9, 2021 (Tues/Thurs): After reading for ten minutes, we then discussed the importance of not getting behind in American Lit. Since I have half of the classes to determine your grades, it's important that you stay caught up with your reading and the reading journals. We then traveled to the costume room, selected our costumes for our immigration simulation, and then took our pictures for our passports. For Tuesday, please have your John Smith journal entry read and annotated. CODE: Mars Colony.
12. Wednesday, September 8, 2021 (Mon/Wed): After reading for ten minutes, I summarized our simulation for next week. We will be costuming Thursday and Friday. I distributed vocabulary and we reviewed the first four words. Next we got into groups of four and worked on discussing the article on Roanoke. It seems like it's taking us forever to get through this article! I might need to find a more efficient way to teach this for next year. Please read and annotate the excerpt of John Smith's diary. CODE: appellation - Hawkeye State
11. Tuesday, September 7, 2021 (Tues/Thurs): After reading for ten minutes, I spent a little time explaining the simulation we will be conducting next Tuesday. We will be choosing clothes and making our passports on Thursday. It hopefully will give us an idea of what the early immigrants went through. Then I divided everyone up into four groups and each group looked at a particular voyage to Roanoke. We're using this article as a way to utilize different annotating skills. We will finish this up on Thursday as well. CODE: Virginia Dare
10. Friday, September 3, 2021 (Tues/Thurs): After reading for ten minutes, we finished our last three presentations. Then I handed out our first set of vocabulary - language, and I shared the vocabulary procedure for American Literature. We discussed annotation, appellation, and eponym. Then we started our discussion of Roanoke Island as well as next week's simulation. You have a reading journal, but it's not due until Tuesday at 4:00 PM. Just don't forget. CODE: annotations
9. Thursday, September 2, 2021 (Tues/Thurs): After reading for ten minutes, we started with our presentations. We still have three left, but we'll finish those up tomorrow. For tomorrow, please read the article I provided called "Roanoke". We're going to work on interacting with a text and figuring out how to remember things we have to read. CODE: It's all Greek to me!
8. Wednesday, September 1, 2021 (Mon/Wed): After reading for ten minutes, we finished our presentations - naturalism and modernism. Then we watched a summary video of the literary movements. Then we started to discuss the various annotations we can use when we want to interact with a text. Please read the Roanoke Island article and annotate it. CODE: timelines.
7. Tuesday, August 31, 2021 (Tues/Thurs): I haven't seen you since last week, so this every-other-day schedule will take some getting used to. We read for ten minutes, and then I divided you into groups of three. Each group was assigned a literary movement. Then we watched a video overview of American Literature, and you were asked to write down any pertinent information. Then for fifteen minutes (you'll get 5-7 more on Thursday), your group was to create a poster outlining the required information (movement, dates, characteristics, historical events, and famous authors and their body of work). You were to read an article on Roanoke, but it failed to photocopy the middle page, so you'll get that on Thursday. CODE: Puritanism
6. Monday, August 30, 2021 (Mon/Wed): After reading for ten minutes (and jumping at the dogs' barking), we then finished up our posters of the various literary movements. We each presented our literary movements (we have two to get through yet), and as the presentations occurred, we then highlighted our notes. For the next class period, please read an article on Roanoke Island. Interact with it - what would you highlight? What notes would you write in the margins? How would you remember the important facts? CODE: telephone lines.
5. Friday, August 27, 2021: After reading for ten minutes, we discussed the reading journals and how to best answer the questions. Then everyone was put into groups of three or four and assigned an American Literature movement. Using the large paper provided, everyone was to create a poster summarizing the time period, the authors and their works, what was going on in the world, and the literature characteristics. We'll finish up on Monday. CODE: Puritans (my time period)
3-4. Wednesday- Thursday, August 25-26, 2021: We discussed our reading personality. For example, I'm eclectic. I love historical fiction, but then I can turn around and read Harry Potter. I am a fast reader, but I also get distracted easily. Often I find that I have to reread because I spaced out. I have a pretty good vocabulary, but if the book is about science, then I feel like I need to look up the terms in order to understand. Then we took some time to find a book for our independent reading program. Please have the book selected before returning to class.
1. Monday-Tuesday, August 23-24, 2021: Today we just got reacquainted using Quizzez. We signed up for Google Classroom and Remind. We also filled out our cards for group work. We then watched the short video on the Power of Words. For Wednesday (or Thursday), please have the Literary Movements skeleton notes completed. CODE: culture.
