Today is Thursday...and it's cold, a snowstorm is looming, and everyone is here! We've had so many absent for the past few days, that it seems a little odd that today, everyone is here!
In Literature 9 we discussed the life and times of Ray Bradbury (a little review). We discussed how he hadn't won a Pulitzer Prize or a Nobel and sometimes that's because the critics that choose those award winners have differing views about excellence. A comparison I made in class was between the Oscar for "Silence of the Lambs" vs. "Beauty and the Beast". We then discussed the story detective for "There Will Come Soft Rains." We discussed the setting (Allendale, CA - 1983 - All-American, small town), characters (protagonist - House [flat, static], antagonist - Nature [tree]), Sarah Teasdale's poem. Then we took a quiz over the two stories we read. Everyone is supposed to read the biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for tomorrow.
In English 10 we finished up the last of our tour speeches. We then reviewed our vocabulary in preparation for tomorrow's vocabulary test. Finally we took some notes on the criteria for using visual aids. Demonstration Speeches are due next Thursday.
In American Literature we started by taking a reading check over the Challenger speech (open note). Some are really struggling with this, but it will come. Also it's always a good idea to come in and ask for help if you're struggling. Then we started our discussion of Patrick Henry. I got through most of the background information, but in third period there is a bit to go.
Tomorrow is Friday, and like I said earlier snow is on the way. But in the meantime, stay warm and safe.
