Today just seemed to fly by. Maybe it was because I was really enjoying myself. You know, those days that you're really connected to what you're doing. That was me today, and ironically, I wasn't even teaching my favorite lessons or stories. I was just in tune with "teaching". Man, I love my job!
In Literature 9 we had a few book talks, then we moved on to studying similes, metaphors, and personification. We watched a fun PowToon video and then worked in groups on finding examples of each in our story. Richard Connell was so good at figurative language - as flat as a plate-glass window, fishy blue eyes, nerves were jumpy. He used this extraordinary language to really create a realistic story. For tomorrow remember your maps are due, along with a quiz over the two stories "Lady or the Tiger" and "The Most Dangerous Game."
In English 10 we worked on introducing ourselves with a firm handshake, eye contact, and a summary (Hello, I'm Brenda Sandbulte, and I'm an English teacher.) You'd be surprised how many times you will have to do that in your lifetime. We reviewed the capitalization and end punctuation rules and then took a check. We are still struggling with getting to our listening notes, but I'll get over it. For tomorrow there are two video links on Moodle about listening. One is on Tony Salvador and listening in the IT world, and the other is a Supreme Court justice and the importance of listening in his job.
In American Literature we got into our vocabulary teams. Most teams are three-person, and they divided up the words and work. On Thursday and Friday, they will work with the words with the following class period an assessment. Then we reviewed anaphora and parallelism. Ronald Reagan's Challenger speech was next on the agenda, and we watched this comforting address. We started to label it for rhetorical devices but again ran out of time. For Thursday, re-read John Smith and William Bradford and look for an example of anaphora, parallelism, and allusion.
Have a great Tuesday. It looks like the sun is trying to shine, and there doesn't seem to be any wind. When does that happen in Iowa!
