I'm going to be completely honest - I'm so ready for the weekend. I realize I have a ton of correcting to do, scripts to write, and websites to update, but I'm desperate to sleep in beyond 5:00 AM. (Knowing me, I'll still wake up that early!)
In Literature 9 we shared examples of imagery from our independent reading book. We had some wonderful examples, and I believe that we're understanding the concept. Then we went to Common Lit. org and looked at the various functions it provides. We began to read O. Henry's story "The Last Leaf". We used the dictionary tool to help us complete our vocabulary. For Monday, everyone should finish reading the story and complete the vocabulary words.
In English 10 we watched a short video produced by CNN and discussed whether it was informative or persuasive. Just because it was showing the positive side of joining the military doesn't necessarily make it persuasive. It wasn't asking us to enlist, so it's more of an informative news story. We then finished taking notes about the four types of informative speaking (concept, object, event, and demonstration). I handed out the perimeters for our personal narrative speech along with the outline. For Monday, you need to have three topics that could be a potential speech. Write them on the index card I provided. If you struggle with ideas, the Internet is full of topics!
In American Literature (4th period) we watched the same CNN video described in English 10. We then went through the article on the Tuskegee Airmen paragraph by paragraph. We looked for key ideas and shared key facts. We discussed how the Tuskegee Airmen and the Civil War black soldiers were similar and yet different. On Tuesday, there will be a quiz over the material related to courage as seen in the military - "In Flanders Fields," "War Prayer," Red Badge of Courage, and "Tuskegee Airmen".
Have a great weekend everyone!
