There is something going around my house, my husband isn't feeling very well, and now at the end of the day, neither am I. I hope it's something temporary as I hate to miss school.
In Literature 9 we discussed allusion (cartoon, Flocabulary, and worksheet) and irony (worksheet, cartoon, and story). We didn't quite finish the story detective, but there isn't much left. For tomorrow, everyone should read pages 144-147 of "Sweet Potato Pie." By the way, this is one of my favorite stories!
In English 10 we spent most of the class period discussing adverb clauses. Pretty boring, but we need to understand that we have to amp up our writing and speaking. We're in the "simple" mode, and our testing data proves it. Whether you can underline a clause or not is irrelevant, what's important is can you incorporate them into your writing/speaking? We then returned to our "list of details" for our personal narrative. We circled those that we could group together. Those will be our main points. Your outline should be complete by tomorrow.
In American Literature we started our next American quality - a sense of duty. I was pretty proud of myself because the opening activity was something I didn't plan but developed as the class period went on. First, we started with a card at each table. The table was to develop a definition of the word "duty". (Yes, we took a few moments to get the giggles out. Duty is just one of those words that make us giggle.) Then we shared each definition with me writing the keywords on the SMART board. Then, they made three columns on their cards, labeling each column with family, community, and nation. Brainstorming for two to three minutes, a list of duties should have developed. We shared and compared our lists looking for common elements. I had a few of my own from an article about civic duty. We read Walt Whitman's poem "O Democracy" and Robert Frost's "Gift Outright." We will compare them next week. For Tuesday, there are two biography worksheets everyone is supposed to complete - one on Whitman and the other on Frost. The links are on Moodle.
The weekend is almost here! Have a good Thursday! Good luck at the Jamboree basketball players.
