I can't believe how fast the days go. I truly love this schedule where I can teach things pretty much back-to-back. I feel like it allows me to be more focused in my teaching as well as allows me to keep two sections fairly in sync.
In Literature 9 it was all about courage and disagreement. Chapter 11 is about the cantankerous Mrs. Dubose. What Atticus saw in her to admire is sometimes beyond me. We discussed that his definition goes beyond our normal definition of courage. I tried to emphasize that courage is starting something, seeing it through regardless of the outcome. That was the quality to admire in Mrs. Dubose. Everyone took their reading check over Chapter 11. Then we played a vocabulary game "Roll on Vocabulary, Roll on!" We'll play another round tomorrow. We will also begin our analysis of the theme and symbols found in this remarkable story.
In English 10 we reviewed our appositives. For some reason appositives don't give us "fits" like other phrases do. We finished scene i of Act 2, took some notes over irony and the terms soliloquy and monologue. We then watched a BBC version of Romeo's soliloquy and began to paraphrase it. Paraphrase is half-way between translation and summary. We will continue to paraphrase things as we read Act II.
In American Literature we started out by analyzing another paragraph by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This paragraph describes the women that are surrounding the scaffold right before Hester Prynne walks out. We highlighted sensory details, figurative language, alliteration, and word choice. We then reviewed the last two vocabulary words related to Criticism and then worked on a lesson. We didn't have a lot of time after that, but everyone is supposed to read the summary and work on the Scarlet Letter packet. Since we won't see each other because of ITED's and some are leaving for the State FFA Convention, it will be difficult to get everyone on the same page. We'll just have to do our best.
In Law we discussed the science behind eye witness testimony. We watched a news story that also had a quiz embedded in it - how good of a witness would you be? Then we watched a TED talk related to eye witness testimony - fascinating. Tomorrow we're going to create an experiment with our classmates - throughout the school and adults too - to test the theory of eye witness testimony. What we'll come up with only imagination can tell!
Have a great Tuesday everyone! The sun is shining, the temperature awesome, and it's a great day to be here!
