Yesterday was just plain crazy! I don't think I've ever started a year or had a speech season where I feel completely unprepared. However, I know that I've been blessed with skills, and I just need to believe it will be o.k.
In Literature 9 we took a reading check over "A Brother's Crime". We then finished up the vocabulary and the chronological order. We discussed the difference between fiction and nonfiction and discovered that it was hard. It's sometimes hard to tell the difference between the two. We will work on Lincoln's second inaugural address tomorrow.
English 10 was all about our career presentation. We discussed what should be on a slide. It was the general consensus that a title slide, one slide for each main point (three total) and then a concluding slide. That last slide is so that when you're winding things up you're not looking at that third point the entire time. We then discussed our speaking notes - 2 cards with as many words as you want. Be careful as this is a trap! When you are allowed to use unlimited notes (2 notecards, frontside), the inclination is to write a lot on them. What happens is we become tied to those notes and fail to use proper communication skills - eye contact, connecting with the audience, etc. We finished up by discussing our job and occupation vocabulary. Outlines are due tomorrow in the Google folder that was shared.
In American Literature we concluded our discussion of the Declaration of Independence. We looked at the rhetorical devices used (anaphora, parallelism, antithesis, ethos, logos, and pathos). We also discussed some of the key signers and their sense of duty to the future generations. As an assessment over the Declaration, a paper was assigned. Everyone is supposed to choose a signer and write how he demonstrated a sense of duty. A specific set of instructions were sent out via email. An introductory paragraph, background, revolutionary war contributions, how this person exhibits duty, and a concluding paragraph. It is expected that a bibliography is attached as well as references to the Declaration throughout the essay. This is due on Tuesday.
In Law we reviewed criminal and civil, sources of law, and felony and misdemeanor. We took our quiz, which looked like it was fairly easy. We then had a few minutes to discussed when we should call a lawyer (handout). We will be discussing negotiation, mediation, and arbitration tomorrow.
Hang in there! Everything will work out.
