Congratulations to the GLR Speech Team and the Ensemble for the All-State nomination last night. This has been a tough year, and to have the state scores, and now a nomination is no small feat. Great job Jillian, Allison, and Aaron.
In Literature 9 we spent all of the class period working on our blackout poetry. Follow the instructions from the handout and you should be able to create some amazing projects. Simply 1) choose an anchor word from somewhere in the anecdote. 2) Now look for words that somehow correlate to the anchor word. Maybe you'll have to create a few words by changing some of the words within the anecdote itself. (taking the letters "ma" from the word "make" and adding it to the "th" from the word "the" and now you have math. Your poem is due tomorrow along with the reverse side of the worksheet.
In English 10 we worked for most of the class period on logos, ethos, and pathos. This is an important concept as it also gives us an insight into what influences us. Are we influenced by logos (numbers, statistics, and expert opinion)? Or is it pathos - an emotional connection? Do you like it? Finally, are you influenced by ethos - the credibility of the person recommending the product? For tomorrow, create a logos argument for your product, finish the worksheet page entitled "logos", and we will be starting our mythology presentations. Everyone should have shared or uploaded their presentation.
In American Literature, we had FUN! We completed a red dot activity. Five individuals drew a slip of paper with a red dot while the rest of the class had a blank piece of paper. The task for the non-dot was to have a group with not dot individuals. The dots were to infiltrate the non-dot group. It was so "fun" to watch juniors turn on each other. It was a little disappointing during fourth hour that some didn't maintain the integrity of the activity and forced some to confess through making them swear to God. Then we tried to 'recreate' the stress and duress of reciting the Ten Commandments by having the audience stare intently at those reciting, whisper things to make them mess up, and their grade was dependent on their successful recitation. It was just an experiment, but a successful one I hope. We did manage to still watch 10 minutes of the movie. For Thursday, you will have a quiz over the Star Spangled Banner.
In Law, we took a quiz over the Federal Courts. With the remaining class period, everyone used a PDF file to answer questions about the Iowa court system.
Good luck to both the wrestling teams and the basketball teams.
