Today everyone that I had (Freshmen through Juniors) signed up for Remind and Moodle. It feels like we're more into the daily routine, but I still want to make things rigorous, but fun. That's my challenge this year.
English 10: After logging into Remind and Moodle, we started talking about our social experiment. They were to provide 10 minutes of positive and 10 minutes of negative feedback to one selected teacher. Many of the teachers reacted exactly as I expected - turning away, ignoring, etc. When the students showered them with positive feedback, they received sustained eye contact and interest. It was fun to see the kids make a connection from their responses to the teachers passion. Then we watched the classic comedy skit "Who's on First?" It's a great way to show the breakdown of the communication model.
American Literature: After logging into Remind and Moodle, we started talking about our novel project. It is due every Sunday at 12:00 Noon. They have to read a minimum number of pages (ten), summarize those pages, and respond to other readers. We discussed making appropriate goals and time management. Things always go so much better in the beginning and then drop off. Then we listened to Chief Seattle's speech about the nature and it's connection to humans. Groups were made, poetry assigned, and on Tuesday we'll connect it even more.
Literature 9: After logging into Remind and Moodle, we began working on our Photostory Autobiography. This is a fun project allowing me to get to know the students, who's willing to work at projects, and the creative element. I'm excited to see the finished projects on Tuesday.
