What a beautiful September day! I'm sitting here watching "Who's on First?" (Abbott and Costello) and enjoying the miscommunication.
In Literature 9 we reviewed our vocabulary notes. Several students did not complete their homework. I'm getting a little frustrated with the freshmen as some aren't getting their homework done. My homework doesn't take too much time, yet they are not getting it done. This will have to change - and soon! We reviewed the vocabulary words as well as the Expand Your Vocabulary words. We watched a debate concerning the lady or the tiger. I was surprised at how many believed the princess sent him to the "lady" door. I don't think I've had classes that one-sided. For homework tomorrow look up the words for the "Most Dangerous Game".
In English 10 we reviewed the Tic-Tac-Toe projects for our book talks. I will be introducing this to my other classes later this week, but I have several students already finished their books. We reviewed the communication model and watched how communication can break down (Who's on First). It's fun to watch kids see this for the first time. We then took a few notes over a meaningful conversation. Tomorrow we're going to have six vocabulary presentations as well as a capitalization check.
In American Literature we filled out our goal sheet. To fill out our goal we look at the number of pages we normally read per 10 minutes. We then took the total number of pages within the chosen book, divide by 20 days (kind of an arbitrary total) to determine the number of pages that should be read each day to make a goal. Then everyone was supposed to choose a date for book completion. It really isn't a lot of work; all I'm asking is that people read. Weekends will be that time to "bank" up pages for a busy week. The thing is the student sets the goal, chooses the book, I'm simply holding them accountable. We then started to look at our unit "What is an American?" Since the goal setting took a little longer than anticipated, we didn't get too far. In third hour they did take their check over the Puritan notes, but fourth hour we struggled. We will be picking up there on Thursday. For homework, everyone is supposed to define rhetorical devices and provide an example.
Have a great Tuesday everyone!
