OK, who stole January? Seriously, if the speed at which this month flew by is any indication of how fast 2014 will go, I'm in trouble!
In Literature 9 we started our second short story unit revolving around the theme of "Rewards and Sacrifices". This unit contains my favorite stories. I love the suspense and irony of the first unit, but I love the lessons and the sweetness of this unit. We started our discussion of "The Gift of the Magi," but most of the day was spent comparing and contrasting Saki and O. Henry. We will hit the story harder next week.
In English 10 we're still trying to get on the same page between the two classes. This morning's class reviewed the words related to mythology, while sixth hour took their mythology vocabulary test. Sixth hour also had time to "select" their topic. We used a randomizer for this as you never know who you might be asked to introduce.
In American Literature we took our quiz/test on The Scarlet Letter. Before we took it, we discussed why this novel is such an American classic. On the literal level, it's a great story, but the social and moral themes are so powerful. It was written in 1850, and yet, it's so relevant today. Every year that I teach this novel (summary), I want to pick up the book and read it again.
In Law we started out with Headline Fridays. The students can bring in some crazy headlines - turkey sandwiches, bear mase, an adulterous minister, and Ben's (for the life of me I can't remember!). We then discussed procedural vs. substantive law. This class is so fun to teach as I really believe they are interested in what I have to share. I hate it when we have a late start because I miss having this course.
Have a great weekend!
