Seventy degree plus weather on Saturday and today a chance of snow? This is crazy...no, this is Iowa. We should be used to it by now.
In Literature 9 it was all about catching up and being on the same page. First hour worked hard on taking their reading checks, discussing the idea behind fine folks, and the way Atticus and Alexandra see the world (caste system). In Fifth Hour we worked on our worksheet reviewing Chapter 12-13, we kind of reviewed the same ideas. We also reviewed the vocabulary for Chapter 14. That's something we still have to do in first hour. One more day and everyone should be set.
In English 10 we started with reviewing verbals (how to tell them apart). This will feed nicely into today's homework - distinguishing verbals. We then took a few minutes to update our summaries (Act II, Scenes i and ii). Then it was time to look at figurative language and Shakespeare's use of it in Act II, Scene ii. We watched a short CBS News item on increasing use of falcons. We topped off class by reading Act 2, Scene iii (the Friar's and Romeo's discussion). Whew! That was a lot for one class period.
In American Government we had a brief current events discussion. I love it when people share their news items. There are some strange ones out there. Then we finished assigning our bills to the proper committee. There really isn't a right or wrong answer because a Speaker could assign them just about anywhere. We added a few notes to the bottom of that worksheet (notes about standing and select committees). Then everyone took a check over "How a Bill Becomes a Law". This reviewed the homework for the last few class periods. We will start our discussion of the controversial bill the Civil Rights Act of 1964. We will be able to follow a bill through the process and discuss its impact on society.
In Law we conducted our eye witness experiment. It was a little disheartening that some things weren't done, but in the end it all worked out. They got their ideas across to the students as well as conducted a fair experiment about what we see when our adrenaline is pumping. Thank you to my pastor for coming in a yelling at the students (as well as waving a prop gun around). Great learning!
Have a great Monday! Stay warm.
