The end of August! Wow. It's hard to believe that at the beginning of August I was in Nashville enjoying a wonderful road trip with my daughter and niece, the bats were removed, we received an extra week of vacation, and now school is in full swing. Time has a habit of moving very quickly.
In Literature 9 we reviewed some of the "extras" for class - fire and tornado drills, where to find extra credit, and how my website is used. In fifth hour we set up our notebook and discussed the importance of organization. In second hour we finished up our stations (finally!) We shared the process we used to complete 26 Letters of the Alphabet - work on our own, ask a friend, go to a parent/adult, and then to the Internet. I reminded them that I should be in there somewhere :-) ! I distributed a worksheet entitled "Fiddler Jones," and we'll get to that and the other assignments tomorrow. Finally, both classes are somewhat on the same page!
In English 10 we had a lot of fun with M & M's. I wasn't so sure about this activity, but now that I've done it once, it was awesome. First, we reviewed why punctuation is important. Then we shared our "Dear John" letters. Then for every M&M that students took, they had to share one piece of information that no one knew about. Therefore, if everyone knew I was a Vikings' fan, I couldn't use that piece of information. Some were very conservative and only took two to three, while others emptied the entire cup! It was fun. We then watched Ashton Kutcher's Teen Choice Acceptance speech as an example of an exemplary speech. We reviewed the web and discussed how he met each criterion. For homework, everyone is to review the basic capitalization rules.
In American Literature we started off with watching "Make Your Bed" and discussing the importance of collaboration, perseverance, and integrity. We then finished our stations. We only did stations 3-9, so it was easier to complete all the tasks. There wasn't much time for anything else, so everyone was reminded to watch the TED talk "The Danger of a Single Story" and complete the questions (found on Moodle.)
A great day. I felt a little out of sorts so far this year, and today I really felt like I was back in the game. Have a great Thursday everyone!
