Huddersfield Town 1 Accies 2

Victoria Park, Hartlepool

Saturday, 26th July 2008

The first team opened the Hartlepool United Centenary Tournament with a good and deserved 2-1 win against League One side Huddersfield Town. Accies went behind early in the second half to a goal from Andy Booth but strikes from James McArthur (left) and Simon Mensing put them through to Sunday's final, where they will face a Sunderland XI. Sunderland defeated the hosts 1-0 with a penalty in the other semi. The game will again be at Victoria Park and will start at 3pm.

Booth put Town ahead in 49mins with a low shot from 6 yards through a ruck of players. McArthur's goal in 58mins followed a good move down the right by Tony Stevenson whose forward pass came off Joe Skarz and fell for McArthur to drive home from 16 yards. Four minutes later Simon Mensing went on a good and unchallenged run through midfield and scored from the edge of the box. Accies played really well and passed superbly against a very strong Huddersfield side.

It was a meaty wee encounter for long spells, particularly in the first half, one challenge sending McCarthy straight off the pitch and down the steps into the Huddersfield dug out.

In the midday sun we lined up

Cerny, Stevenson, Easton, McCarthy, McLaughlin (Swailes 45), Mensing, Graham, McArthur, Offiong (Waterworth 68 ), Neil, Corcoran (Trialist 50)

Unused subs Evans, Hall
