DARGE, William (1938)
Overview
A youngster signed in March 1938 from Portobello Thistle, a centre forward. In a reserve match at home to Raith Rovers on 22nd October 1938 he scored all of Accies goals in a 6-2 win. Five months later his haul was 5 goals in a 6-5 win for the reserves at Kilmarnock.
A player of great potential who was at Hamilton at the wrong time when one considers that Davie Wilson was the regular goalscorer and when Davie was nearing the end of his career the Second World War occurred and young Darge was away in the Forces and was a prisoner of war. He had been feared missing. With the Gordon Highlanders in France he was captured at Dunkirk and was held in Stalag V11B. By the time he returned following the cessation of hostilities, he had lost much of his enthusiasm for the game and drifted away from Accies.
Debut on 2nd April in a Lanarkshire Cup Semi Final match away to Albion Rovers in which he scored both goals in a 2-0 win.
