Overview

One of the best players to wear the colours in the post war years. Stan, as he became known to the fans, played with LMS Amateurs before being signed from Lesmahagow Juniors in 1958 by the late John Lowe and made his debut along with Walter Agnew against Stenhousemuir. At that time he was regarded as an inside forward.

In 1959 he stepped back to the left half berth and his displays there attracted Rangers, and on 24th November 1959, he was transferred for a fee of £8000, to the Ibrox club. By 1961 he was back at Douglas Park. Soon he was off on his travels again when an offer was made to him to join Queen of the South, who were in the top league at that time, and he took it up. Stan was back "home" when the new season opened in 1963. This stay lasted three seasons during which time he was one of the main reasons why the club gained promotion in 1965. The following term in the First Division, he was Accies captain and top scorer.

With the club being relegated he was on the move once more, this time to Clyde, where he became as big a favourite with the Bully Wee fans as he had been at Douglas Park. He next had a spell with Dumbarton as coach. On 29th May, 1970, he was back at Ibrox, as assistant trainer. Four years later he returned to Shawfield, to be appointed to the role as manager. However after only two years in charge, Stan had to give up the post due to illness.

He was a first class player, a good passer of the ball and could put a bit of dig into his play when necessary. He attended Douglas Park on a regular basis after his enforced retirement from the game. Born in Craigneuk on 22nd June 1939, he died in Hamilton in December 1997 at a relatively young age after a long illness.
