MORAN, Martin (1909)

Overview

Bannockburn born on 19th December 1879, Martin was an outside right described as a midget, light as a feather.

As a junior with Benburb he was given an outing by Celtic against Sheffield United in a match at Bramall Lane on March 12th 1898, in what was described as the Championship of Great Britain. He had an outstanding game and was signed thereafter. He appeared mainly in Glasgow League fixtures while at Parkhead and made few Scottish League appearances while there.

He then signed for Clyde, Sheffield United in 1899, Middlesbrough in 1900, then to Millwall in August 1902. While in London he was declared a gem, a managers dream. When Chelsea were admitted to the English League he was in their first side in 1905. He missed not a single match in his three seasons there and then he came back to Celtic Park in 1908.

A year on, in June 1909 he was taken on by Accies where his vast experience was put to good use as the club set out to build a side capable of remaining in the First Division. Also said to have been signed by Rangers. His final club came in 1910 when he went to Albion Rovers.

Only 5’5” and turned the scales at 10sts 7lbs.
