Partick Thistle 0 Accies 1 Saturday: 18 September 1999

Accies beat Partick Thistle 1-0 at Firhill today in a match between the 10th and 9th teams in the league. The goal came after only a couple of minutes and I have to confess that, as I was still taking my seat, I didn't actually see what happened. (I have to confess that this was due to a combination of some delicious "Guiness Extra Cold" in the Springbank Cottage and my friend Graeme's prowess at the pool table.) I was told at the time that Darren Henderson scored from close range following a corner from his namesake Nicky, but the Ceefax tonight says it was Gordon Hunter's first goal for the club. Incidentally, he then limped off the park after about 15 minutes.

I could give you the usual report about the very few near things and who played well and who got subbed etc. I won't. Suffice it to say that it was actually a fairly tedious match between two teams who looked as if they have found their league positions on merit. Neither goalkeeper was unduly worried and I can't remember Chris Reid actually having to make a save.

All of the Accies players deserved pass marks, but Bill Davidson as sweeper and Nicky Henderson up front were particularly effective. The game marked the first time Accies have won two consecutive league games since November 1997 - a frightening indicator of the rapid decline of the club since Jim Watson regained control that summer.

In any event, it was great to see the team win again and with any luck they'll have gained a great deal in confidence from the last couple of weeks.

Partick Thistle, incidentally, were truly awful. They did have a good deal of the ball but only looked like scoring once in the first half with a shot which scraped the post. Lots of Accies fans chanted for John Lambie to stay - which says quite a lot.

After the game, there was a reasonable turnout of fans chanting for Jim Watson and his cronies to quit the club. When he emerged, however, he had nothing to say and sped off in George McLaughlin's car.

Accies : Reid, Martin, Cunnington, Davidson, Hunter, Maclaren, Thomson, Bonnar, N Henderson, McCormick and D Henderson
