BONNYMAN, Philip (1973)

Overview

In 1973, on being freed by Rangers whom he had joined from Hamilton Avondale, Eric Smith wasted no time in getting Phil's signature for Accies. He settled into the middle of the defence in no time and was soon attracting the attention of other clubs. His displays while at Douglas Park earned him a place in the Scotland side which met Italy in the Semi-Professional tournament played in Pescara. Phil was Accies Player of the Year in 1975.

In 1976 he was transferred to Carlisle United for a substantial fee. He then played at Chesterfield, the transfer fee being £150,000, while with them he scored twice against Rangers in an Anglo Scottish Cup tie.

Next came Grimsby Town, Stoke City, on loan, and Darlington before his move to Dunfermline in 1989 as Second Team Coach. He actually turned out for their first team at Aberdeen in 1990.

When Iain Munro came to Hamilton as Manager in June, 1992, he brought Phil as his assistant. His next position was as one of the SFA's Community Coaches, a role he took up in December 1993, working in the Hamilton area with youngsters.

On giving up that job he went to Petershill Juniors as their Manager. In 1998 he resigned as Manager of Huntly Town and took on the role of First Team Coach with Port Vale. He parted company with them in January 1999. Later that year he was on Ayr United’s Coaching staff and the in August he returned to Huntly where he once again took on the role as Manager. After a spell lasting two years he again left the Highland League club. In 2001 he was once again involved when he was appointed as Assistant Manager at Forfar Athletic.

At 5' 11", his height was used to good effect in the defence and also as a forcing midfielder when called upon as such.

Born in Glasgow on 6th February 1954.

Debut on 9th August 1973 in a Friendly Match against Leeds United which Accies won 4-3.
