BULLOCH, Jamie (1929)

Overview

Jamie hailed from Craigneuk and played junior with Law Scotia before joining Accies in 1929. A year earlier he had played a trial with Albion Rovers. He was a wagon builder to trade and was a Junior Internationalist. Scotland’s Juniors met a side from the Irish Free State in Dublin in March 1929 before 26,000 fans with the Scots winning 2-1. Among his other honours were several games in which he played for the Lanarkshire Junior League.

He was a left half although he made his debut as a left back, and did very well on that outing, and was regarded as a utility man. When he moved to left back permanently he made the position his own.

When Accies defeated Motherwell in the two legged Final of the Second Eleven Cup in April 1934 Jamie played in both matches. He played in three Scottish Cup Semi Finals for Hamilton. 1930 versus Partick Thistle, 1932 v Rangers and Aberdeen in 1935. He captained the side which appeared in the 1935 Cup Final against Rangers. He lost his place in the side to John Scott and was out off the game for a little before returning to play for the reserves in January 1938.

He was freed in April 1938 and he went to Morton. When Jimmy McStay took over as Alloa manager he took Jamie to Recreation Park and made him captain. A good move as the Wasps went on to win the Second Division title and were unlucky to lose to Hibernian in the Quarter Finals of the Scottish Cup in 1939. In 1940 he was again signed by Morton.

Of average build at 5’8” and 11sts 8lbs.

During the Second World War he served with the 1st Lothians and Border Horse Regiment of the 79th Armoured Division and took part in the Normandy Landings. After the war he settled in Germany and took up a position as a football coach. He died in a hospital in Lubeck, Germany on April 27th 1992 at the age of 83.

Debut on 21st September 1929 in a Scottish League match away to St Johnstone.
