JOHNSTONE, Jocky (1919)

Overview

At the start of his junior career while with Ashgill Rovers in 1910, he was an outside left. The following season he had moved to Larkhall Thistle. Born in the Parish of Dalserf, John was a left half with Parkhead Juniors, with whom he appeared in the Scottish Cup Final of 1916 in a match which was lost 2-0 to Petershill Juniors, prior to him joining Kilmarnock. That same year he played against England at Firhill.

In 1919 he came to Hamilton. In his role at left half, he was part of the Accies side which beat Albion Rovers in the Lanarkshire Cup Final in April 1920. He was loaned to Armadale in 1921 to play in the Scottish Cup for them.

Given a free in 1922 he decided to keep in the senior grade with Royal Albert. Another of the mining fraternity, he kept himself very fit. His son, also John or Jocky, played for the club after the Second World War at left back.

He was 5’8” and 11sts 6lbs.

Debut on 5th April 1919 in a First Division League match against Kilmarnock.
