PARK, John (1933)

Overview

John was signed from Douglas Water Thistle in April 1933 after an impressive outing in the reserve side and came into the side later in 1933 at outside right, and he was reported as enterprising and alert. He held his place until the campaign’s close. Not so the following term when his outings were greatly reduced.

Again he appeared in the side in 1935-36 after the transfer of Bobby Reid to Brentford and with Jimmy King moving over to the left wing John came back into favour and from January 1936 until he left for Newcastle United the 14th of April he played 11 games and scored 12 times in that period. In one match against Dunfermline Athletic on 29th February 1936 he scored 4 goals, 3 of which were penalties to emulate Alex Herd who also netted 3 times from the penalty spot in a match for Accies. John’s transfer cost the English club £1,800.

He came back to Accies in August 1940. He also appeared with Stranraer and Third Lanark as a war time guest. In England he saw service with Chester and Wrexham. A miner, and when he gave up the playing side he was one of the officials of his former junior side, Douglas Water Thistle. He was a resident of Lesmahagow.
