Hamilton Accies 2 Albion Rovers 1

New Douglas Park

Saturday, 24 July 2004

Accies played their first home pre season friendly on Saturday and it was the first time the new Field Turf surface had been used. The new pitch played very well and the players seemed to get used to it very quickly.

The game was a bit of a disappointment (as expected??), and Accies really only got going a few times. Accies took the lead after 28 minutes with a well struck effort from Chris Aitken from 20 yards that went in off Chris Fahey's post. Rovers equalised 8 minutes later thanks to a superb shot from Graeme McLaren into the top corner. No blame could be given to Dave McEwan for this one - no goalie would have saved it.

The final goal of the game came in the second half when substitute Iain Fyfe's shot was well saved by Chris Fahey. The ball bounced nicely for Mark Corcoran and he stooped to head home. Ricky Waddell was very unlucky near the end with a lovely free kick that beat Fahey but rebounded from the crossbar.

Rovers had a few chances in the second half but found Dave McEwan in good form in the Accies' goal.

Rovers had man mountain Mark Yardley in their side and it's hard to believe that they're going to persevere with him. I know he was a good player in his day and may still have a certain amount of skill, but to go into the league campaign with such a fat player is nothing short of embarrassing.

Memories of Peter Kay in those Tetley's adverts came flooding back. I mean no disrespect to Albion Rovers but if it was my team I would be cringing at the sight of him in the strip!

Accies: McEwan, Walker, Waddell, Thomson, Hodge, Tunbridge, Carrigan, Aitken, Convery, Gribben, Blackadder
