BOWMAN, Andrew (1965)

Overview

When Accies were due to play in the First Division in 1965, Manager Andy Paton realised that experience was a must to assist his team. To this end he brought Andy to Hamilton when he returned from playing in America after a spell in Kent with Tonbridge in the Southern League, where he had gone after he was released by Newport County.

A Fifer, born in Pittenweem, on 7th March, 1934, he was capped for Scotland as a schoolboy. His first senior club was Chelsea, whom he joined at the age of 15 and he turned professional in June 1951.

Two years later he signed for Hearts, remaining there for eight years, giving sterling service as a hard working wing half. Andy was an all action type and was well known for his ability at a throw in. A ball winning wing half. He was part of the Tynecastle squad which won the First Division title in 1958 and 1960 as well as collecting a League Cup winner’s medal in 1960. While at Tynecastle he played in Hearts inaugural European tie against Standard Liege of Belgium.

On leaving Accies in 1966, he assisted Hawick Royal Albert before, in 1967 joining Stenhousemuir for a few games. Father of Dundee United's Dave who had commenced his career with Heart of Midlothian in 1980. Andy worked as a heating engineer with Edinburgh & Newcastle Brewers and was a regular at Prestonfield Golf Club before he retired to his birthplace.

He died on March 2nd 2009, five days short of his 75th birthday.

Debut in a Scottish League Cup tie at Cowdenbeath which was drawn 1-1 on 14th August 1965.
