McLAUGHLIN, Joe (1945)

Overview

Joe was performing with Douglas Water Thistle when he was spotted by Celtic and he played his first match for them at left half in 1941. He also played at centre forward and had a remarkable scoring rate in 1944-45 averaging a goal a game.

He preferred the half back position and when he signed for Accies in 1945 that was where he was employed. As the club struggled to score, he was moved forward much against his will and when Aberdeen offered £1,000 for him he was on his way north. There he gained a Scottish Cup Winners medal in 1947.

Three years later he went to Raith and he went on to become coach at Stark’s Park. Later he moved to Albion Rovers before finally calling a day with Sligo Rovers.

Debut on 17th November 1945 in a Southern League match away to Aberdeen.
