Accies Career
Overview
A prolific scorer with his junior side, Saltcoats Victoria. In season 1960-61 it was reported that he found the net on ninety five occasions for the seaside men. Andy Paton had had him out in 1959 while Willie was with Kilbirnie Ladeside and had kept track of his scoring exploits. He kept after him and in 1962 Willie made the move to Douglas Park where he maintained his exceptional scoring rate.
He was arguably the best centre forward the club have had since the late, great Davie Wilson, in terms of his strike rate, admittedly Willie's figures were accrued in the lower Division mainly but nevertheless they are impressive. He never gave up, giving opposing defences little peace. Scored four goals in a match on two occasions for Accies.
When he was freed in 1966 he went to Berwick Rangers for a couple of years but was never able to recapture his scoring form of previous years.
Died at a young age.
Debut as a trialist in a Scottish League match away to St Johnstone on 31st January 1959 in a 1-1 draw.
