MAIN, Willie (1908)
Overview
Signed by Albion Rovers from Airdrieonians on 1st February 1899 and he played for Rovers in the Final of the Scottish Qualifying Cup at Dens Park on 28th November 1903, before a crowd of 8,000, against Arbroath. The Angus side won 4-2 with fair haired Main scoring the Rovers second and setting up the first. The number 8 shirt was worn in that match.
From Albion Rovers, in August 1908, he made his way to Douglas Park. In his two plus seasons at Hamilton he turned out at inside left or on either of the wings. A naturally talented performer who gave his all in play and he gave way to Peter Somers who had returned from Celtic in August 1910 and Willie moved back to Albion Rovers in January 1911. In his time at Coatbridge from 1901 he was reckoned to among the top ten goalscorers of all time with the Rovers with 84 in all known fixtures.
Debut on 31st August 1908 in Willie Brownlie’s Benefit Match at home to Queen’s Park in which he scored.
