FERGUSON, Allan (1988)

Overview

Allan's baptism in the first eleven came in a Scottish Cup game against Meadowbank Thistle in January 1988, as his namesake, Rikki, was unavailable because of an injury. Allan came from Netherdale Community, having been with Jerviston Boys Club earlier, and was farmed out to Armadale Thistle in 1987. He soon made the yellow jersey his own and established himself in the side. His displays attracted the attention of the Under 21 selectors and he was named in their squad on a number of occasions.

He sustained a bad injury at Firhill against Partick Thistle in 1991 and was out for some time after that. An instinctive shot stopper, only Rikki Ferguson has turned out for the club in goal more often than Allan. Earlier with Accies as Chris Hillcoat was out with an injury, Allan captained the side in the Quarter-Final tie in the League Challenge Cup versus Brechin City on 5th September 1997 at Cliftonhill.

In 1998 he was signed by St Johnstone as cover to Alan Main while Sandy Clark was the Perth Manager. Didn’t make too many appearances but in one match at Ibrox he was badly injured and was out for some time. Ian McCall then took him to Airdrieonians in April 2001 on a short term contract, where he won a B and Q Cup Winners medal.

When McCall took over the reins at Falkirk that same year Allan once again was on the move where his experience helped the Bairns into the Premier League in 2005. He was freed by Falkirk Manager, John Hughes in May 2006. In October he was training with Queen of the South.

At the beginning of 2007 he was back at Hamilton as Goalkeeping Coach. In April that year he was signed by Stranraer with only four matches of the season left as the Stair Park side fought to climb away from the play off place.
