McLAUGHLIN, Willie (1903)

Overview

Formerly with Cambuslang Hibs. He appeared at centre forward on his debut but was used more often at inside forward.

In 1904 he claimed he was owed £33 by the club as compensation for loss of earnings, this was substantiated by the club's former Secretary, Mr T. Moore. When the case came before the SFA on 4th September he was awarded £15.

He moved to Everton in season 1904-05. Two years later he was playing in the Southern League with Plymouth Argyle before joining Preston North End.

He was resigned by Accies in 1909. Willie captained the Accies side which took Celtic to a replay in the Scottish Cup Final in 1911. Signed by Shelbourne of Dublin in September 1912. A centre half by the time he left Hamilton for the second time.

He was a school teacher as well as a fine footballer. His death occurred on 20th July 1946 at his home in Cambuslang where he lived with his sister.

Debut on 13th April 1903 in the Benefit Match for Sandy Cowan versus Motherwell.
