McCORMACK, Charlie (1924)

Overview

Junior with Bellshill Athletic, in January 1916, before his move to Third Lanark from whom he joined Accies in 1924. On his debut he was said to be cool under pressure, though lacking in pace, he had an effective game with some good clearances. Charlie was a popular figure at full back with Accies.

In 1921 he went on Third Lanark’s tour to Canada and USA which lasted from 10th May until 1st August mainly due to the time it took to get there and back by boat. As a matter of interest they returned with a near 100% record as they won all of their 19 matches in Canada, scoring 86 goals for the loss of only 8, while they drew one of the 9 played in America, with 27 goals for and 10 against.

In April 1927 Alex Binnie was injured during the match against Rangers and Charlie took over in goals. He had quite a match. Firstly he saved a penalty and then put Accies in front with a penalty. It wasn’t until the end of the march that he was at last beaten to level the scores. Not surprisingly he was cheered from the field by the home supporters. He had played a real captains’ part. The following season he was one of three Accies players who were chosen in a Lanarkshire Select who met a Rangers/Celtic Select at Douglas Park.

A number of players were released at the end of the 1927-28 season and he was one of them, he wasn’t without a club for long as Ayr United signed him on 8th August 1928.

Born in Coatbridge, in 1925 his height and weight were recorded as 5’8” and 12sts.

Debut against Dundee at Douglas Park on 22nd November 1924 in a Scottish League match.
