HANLON, Jock (1913)
Overview
John came to Douglas Park in 1913 at the age of 19 from the junior club, Fauldhouse West End and while with them he was capped by Scotland. He resided in Addiewell and was well known at sports meetings the length and breadth of the country, he often ran under the name of “Harris”. Joined the Army and turned out for Heart of Midlothian as a guest in 1916.
At the Dunbar Sports on 15th July 1916, he won the obstacle race, the 100 yards, the 220 yards and was part of the successful relay and 5 a side teams for his regiment, the Royal Scots. He was a dispatch rider in France while in the forces. He also ran at meetings south of the border and there too he was very successful.
The Great War over he returned to Hamilton and he continued to please the fans with his lightning dashes down the right wing. A member of the Accies side which beat Albion Rovers in the Lanarkshire Cup Final in April 1920 at Motherwell before an attendance of 6,000.
In October 1922 he was transferred to Heart of Midlothian. He never quite made it at Tynecastle and the next season he moved to Bathgate. Also turned out for Peebles Rovers. By August 1925 he was signed by Alloa Athletic and was still competing with much success at sports meetings. In 1935 he was passing on his knowledge as a fitness fanatic when he was acting as trainer to Stoneyburn Juniors.
John was 5’7” and 10sts 7lbs.
Debut on 12th April 1913 in a Friendly at home to Airdrieonians.
