Stenhousemuir 0 Accies 0: Wednesday 10 November 1999

Report by Donald Anderson

Immediately after kick-off, my friend Scott Harrison joked "This game's got nil-nil written all over it". Unfortunately, he was proved to be the last true prophet of the Millenium. The game was rather like the previous match against Thistle without the good bits. Almost all I can remember from the first half was a half hearted header which Ian McFarlane slapped away his top left corner and a lot of broken down passes. Martin Bonnar was particularly poor with his distribution, and Darren Henderson never really got going. Nicky Henderson did have a chance to shoot from the right of the box, but side footed the ball against the post.

In the second half, with Accies shooting towards their own support, the story didn't change much, but Stephen McCormick did get a few ripples of applause for some of his attempts at fighting for the ball. It wasn't any more effective than usual, but from behind the goals it did look a bit more credit worthy. There wasn't the usual cheer when he was substituted, which is progress of a sort. The nearest chance came when Alan Lawrence diverted a low Accies cross away from the advancing Dazza and clipped the outside of the Stennie keeper's right hand post. Ian McFarlane also managed to concede an indirect free kick for picking up an obvious pass back - presumably the chilly weather and aimless outfield play combined to temporarily numb his brain. There was one other chance when Darren was almost put through the middle but he had to stretch for it and didn't make contact. Nicky Henderson had a slight, but unlikely claim for a penalty when he was nudged off the ball at the right hand side of the box, but he wasn't really going anywhere anyway.

The night was best summed up when substitute Stephen Renicks twice fell over the ball in quick succession during a cross field run. Man of the Match: probably Nicky Henderson, but I would otherwise have given it to McCormick for the sake of irony.
