CAUGHEY, Mark (1987)
Overview
In the short time he wore the Accies colours, Mark became a great favourite with the Hamilton fans. A Northern Irishman, he played against the Scottish Junior side in 1983 at Shotts and scored twice in a 4-3 win for Scotland. He again played against the Scots in 1985 in a 3-0 win for his country.
His play with Linfield in the Irish League had earned him selection for Northern Ireland in 1986, when he came on as a substitute against France and Denmark. His style encouraged Hibs to bring him to Scotland. He didn't quite make it at Easter Road and before being released by them he had a loan spell with Burnley.
John Lambie got him on loan at the end of the 1986-87 season and then made the move permanent for the start of the next. He was a big hit in the First Division and he was instrumental in helping the club to a record eight wins in a row, before his shock move to Motherwell after only sixteen games, with Jamie Fairlie returning to Douglas Park as part of the deal. His ten goals scored at that time were still good enough for him to be leading goalscorer when the term was over, this in Accies second title winning season.
He possessed a strong shot and his 12 sts 9lbs bulk made him an ideal striker who scored from the penalty spot on more than one occasion. He wasn't the type to stroke the ball into the corner of the rigging, rather a cannonball special. A real personality.
By 1992 he was back on his native soil with Ards and Bangor City. Thereafter he was still playing with Glentoran and then Limavady United and finally with Port Stewart.
Born in Belfast on 27th August 1960.
Debut on 4th April 1987 in a Premier League match away to Motherwell which Accies lost 3-0.
